I Am In Control

True love is freedom. God loves us so much that he lets us choose him, and even if we don’t; he loves us anyway. Forcing someone to do something is controlling and manipulative. These are two things that cannot exist in the context of a healthy, loving relationship. God is not a controlling or manipulative God. He is not an angry, wrathful God. God is sovereign but he is relational above all. He is a loving God. God IS love. His first commandment is to love. He gave up the opportunity to lord over us with strict rules and dish out harsh judgments by sending his son to die for our benefit out of pure love. He desired a close, intimate relationship with us over being a “boss” in our lives. He wants to be our daddy. The one we run to for love, guidance, acceptance and encouragement, not the one we hide from in shame with fear of punishment.

He gives us free will in everything we do, because it’s not really love if you don’t let someone make their own choices. Many people believe that God is in control of everything that happens in this world and that he’s even in control of us. I think there are many clear indications that this is not reality.

God commands us

He gives us instructions throughout the bible in many areas from spreading the gospel, dealing with difficult people and taking wise counsel. It’s very apparent to me that God finds it very important to equip us with knowledge to make our own choices over sovereignly controlling us and our lives. Otherwise there would be no point to the countless scriptures where were encouraged to grow, learn and better ourselves.

Walk with the wise and become wise, associate with fools and get in trouble. -Proverbs 13:20

God is giving us the ability to make choices daily. He lets us be in control and responsible for our actions. He would not advise us otherwise.

A person with good sense is respected; a treacherous person is headed for destruction. -Proverbs 13:15

God wants us to experience growth

There’s no point in growing or learning from lifes experiences and mistakes if God is just going to swoop in and clean up all my messes. He wants us to learn as we go, make adjustments and grow in wisdom. God knows that we will make mistakes and has even already forgiven all of them. His hope is that we will learn from them and consult his word to deal with things in the future. I love that God is there to help us get something out of every mistake to be even smarter and better tomorrow.  Through having a teachable spirit, an open mind and a humble heart we can experience God’s best for us.

Where there is strife there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice. – Proverbs 13:10

God does not magically change us. He puts the capability, tools and responsibility in our hands. Like a loving father, he guides and advises, but sits back and waits to watch his little one fly on their own, while still providing the safety net of his love in case it’s needed.

The instruction of the wise is like a life giving fountain, those who accept it avoid the snares of death. -Proverbs 13:14

Jesus commissions us as his disciples

Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the father. – John 14:12

God created this world just for us. To enjoy us and to love us. But once evil took a place in our world, God sent Jesus to destroy the Mosaic covenant once and for all, reconcile us back to him, free us from the controlling forces of law and sin and empower us to continue Jesus’ ministry in our individual callings with the same level of power and authority as the heirs to the kingdom of heaven. We are not robots, all programmed the same and mindlessly controlled. We are each uniquely created to cause radical changes here on earth. You hold a destiny inside of you that God has given you to live out that no one else can. We hold the power of Jesus inside of us because God wants us to use it with authority, precision and confidence. He doesn’t force us to do a thing. It’s a free gift he gives us out of love. We’re entitled to it and so much more just because we’re his kids. He is the king of kings, with the largest and most powerful kingdom you can imagine, and we’re the princes and princesses who hold the keys to the gates and are entrusted with great responsibility and power.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. – Matthew 28:19

We are now in a covenant of love, relationship and sonship. The more we cultivate love and God’s power here on earth, the more powerless the enemy becomes. Don’t be deceived to believe that you are to sit idly by while God controls everything and you hold no responsibility for the life you live, the things that happen around you or the people you influence. You have been given the power to change your atmosphere, advance the kingdom, touch someones life and change the world! God is waiting for us to discover his everlasting love for us and our identity in him to fulfill the calling he’s placed on our lives! You are not powerless. You are powerful. Your daddy says run with the freedom I’ve given you and do amazing things. You are in control.

In His Love,
